KEY STAGE 3: ENGLISH COURSE CHOICES
For students aged 11–14 who need time to grow in confidence or develop the building blocks for future study.
Focus: Core skills in reading and writing and transition to I/GCSE Study.
All young people are happier if they can read with enjoyment and write with confidence. They enjoy a more successful social and working life if they can speak with clarity and listen with attention and understanding.
English within the context of the National Curriculum strives towards all these goals as well as introducing students to a range and wealth of 'great literature'. But English is not just about comprehension, written accuracy and appreciating an accepted canon. English is the foundation on which all future learning is built. It's about developing emotional and imaginative energies about personal discovery and examining the nature of other people.
KEY STAGE 4: GCSE ENGLISH CHOICES
For students aged 14–16 ready to embark on I/GCSE-level study
Focus: GCSE reading and writing skills and equipping students with the tools necessary to excel in their examinations and beyond.
KEY STAGE 5: A LEVEL ENGLISH CHOICES
For students aged 16–18 ready to begin their Post-16 journey
Focus: Critical reading, literary theory, creative and academic writing in additional to complete coverage of the specification.
KEY STAGE 3 ENGLISH
Our Key Stage 3 small group classes build upon students' previous learning while preparing them for KS4 and post-16 education. We cover the National Curriculum, with additional Nexus Educate materials that provide depth and variety. Our commitment to high standards, diverse teaching methods, personalised feedback, and tailored support ensures that students enjoy their English lessons while achieving their best.
Throughout Key Stage 3, students will:
Engage with a Variety of Texts: Explore historical and contemporary fiction and non-fiction, including whole books, short stories, poems, and plays across multiple genres. We celebrate writers from various cultures and traditions, which makes our English courses rich, rewarding and relevant.
Write for Diverse Purposes: Develop writing skills for various audiences and intents, including stories, scripts, poetry, descriptive writing, notes, summaries, diaries, letters (formal and informal), as well as articles, reports, and transactional writing.
Refine Essential Skills: Revise and enhance skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. We consolidate grammatical knowledge, expand vocabulary, and enrich students' ‘English Toolbox’ with language and structural devices to enhance their expression across the curriculum.
English is a vital part of every student’s learning journey, but it doesn’t have to be a slog!
We invite prospective parents to consider how our Key Stage 3 English courses can support students in becoming confident readers and accomplished writers by cultivating reading for pleasure, writing for personal development, and engendering a love for language that will serve them well into the future.
